In the aftermath of turkey, I'm sitting quietly in the guest room at my mommy's house. The window is cracked to the cold, snowy air, and the music of a bubbling extended family trips up the stairs.
In a few hours, we'll pack up our little family and head into the village where I grew up for apples, cider, and The Best Cider Donuts in the World.
As we roll over the Chester County hills and back roads, I'll probably fight back a tear or two. Or maybe I won't fight them. Maybe I'll just pull down my sunglasses from their perch atop my head and let them fall.
I can't really imagine living here, where I spent my entire childhood, any longer. This place, though, is part of my fabric. Its historic elegance and grit push their way into your being - anyone who's lived here knows - and won't let go. There were battles, writers, farmers, and artists. There were captains of industry and civil movements and heroes. There are, still.
We're not partaking in any of the Black Friday hubbub. It's not deliberate, it's just how we are. We've never pounced on the deal. We've always spent time together over the malls. We will head on to the local university town later, where my vintage "dealer" has a few gowns on hold for me (coming up to gala season, I've already worn the ones I have around the people I'll see at the next few events). Even that shopping, though, as good as it promises to be, is a connection to here: owner Malena is a childhood friend of my sister's, whom I've known since, well, for a long time.
As we roll into the shopping season, I'm not going to preach staying home and abstaining from shopping. I'm not gong to recommend DIY or freecycled gifts. There's just too much joy in finding that perfect something for loved ones. What I will suggest, though, is that find a way to find little joys in your preparations. Perhaps there's a half hour you can browse a new store and discover a new favorite. Maybe there's a trip to your old neighborhood to wander for a few and take in the decorations. My personal favorite? I love to wander an outdoor shopping area in the crisp air, little surprises filling the bags I'm carrying, and listen to the piped-in carols.
Find the little joys in the hustle and bustle, and the craziness of the season will settle and part, maybe even reminding you what is so special about this time of year.

Break in Style: Please Forgive the Blogger
Clockwise, from top left: Wonder, angel chimes, and advent calendars otherwise known as Important Pieces of the Season; the gift I was most excited to give (more of what photographer Amy Carmichael Smith captured of the Beans here); NYE in my flannel and ragg; packed up and ready to go for my first workout of the year January 2; all dolled up and ready to go (from the Willard Hotel lobby to a party at the Museum of American History); fully back to work, mixing prints, colors, and textures in the hopes of getting through long days.
You've heard this from me before, but life is a little crazy at the moment. As much as I love blogging, and as much as it's a break from the day-to-day grind for me to whip up an answer to a question or a few thoughts on a stylish topic, I need to take a bit of a break. At least from regular posts. I know better than to say there won't be anything for a bit - I say that, then I somehow find the time to post three in a row.
But since you've been reading, many of you, for a Very Long Time (bows gratefully in thanks), you know I'll be back. In the meantime, I'll still tweet, Instagram, and even a bit of facebook, since those are literally at my fingertips wherever I am, in whatever line I'm waiting.

Holiday Style: By the Light of the Tree
As we head into the Big Christmas Weekend, our little home will be scrambl- I mean, leisurely decking our final halls and baking our little hearts out.
Blessedly, we have nary a party or commitment this weekend. So I'm saving my sequins for Christmas Eve, I think, when we trim our tree, head to the early family service at church, then have a lovely dinner of crepes, which has become a family tradition.
We may or may not also be having a cocktail or two by the light of the Christmas tree as we wrap The Beans' presents.
May the joy and peace of the season find you and yours.

1940s tree strung with real silver tinsel; Artillery Punch, my new cocktail love, after friends served it at their rockin' Christmas party last weekend (this link takes you to Chow.com's recipe, but for my friend's practiced alterations, see below for recipe); amazing gilded cocktail glasses; I can't wait to pair a cozy, slouchy sweater with similarly-hued sequins (also, cheap!). Check out the rest of the boards these pieces are are on for more ways to decorate, drink, and dress over the holidays!
Artillery Punch
Adapted from the New York Times, which was adapted from David Wondrich
Time: 90 minutes
Makes about 25 drinks (hmmm...maybe I'll just make a batch sans bubbly this weekend, then add the bubbly as I need - ahem - want a drink)
14 lemons
1 pound superfine sugar
750-milliliter bottle Old Granddad 100 Proof Bourbon
750-milliliter bottle Courvoisier VSOP Cognac
750-milliliter bottle 10 Cane rum
3 bottles Champagne or other sparkling wine
Nutmeg
1. Squeeze and strain the lemons to make 16 ounces of juice. Peel the lemons and muddle the peels with the sugar. Let the peels and sugar sit for an hour, then muddle again. Add the lemon juice and stir until sugar has dissolved. Strain out the peels.
2. Fill a 2- to 3-gallon bucket or bowl with crushed ice or ice cubes. Add the lemon-sugar mixture and the bourbon, Cognac and rum. Stir and add the Champagne. Taste and adjust for sweetness. Grate nutmeg over the top and serve.
Yield: About 25 drinks

Weekend Style: Holiday Version
This weekend was full. Very full, and I have the bags under my eyes to prove it. But we had a wonderful time, and spent time all together. Which is the Most Important Thing. Ever.
Clockwise, from top left:
Bark has become my go-to hostess (and teacher) gift. For a host(ess), "upgrade" by buying a pretty box and putting the crumbly, ridiculsouly easy homemade treat inside. For teachers, buy a simple white candy gift box at a craft or container store, then have your Beans decorate it themselves.
Danny Kaye (aka Bean No.2) had his stage debut Friday at his preschool Christmas pageant. He refused to wear his tinsel halo, but otherwise was obviously the star of the show.
While waiting for Santa to return from his lunch break so we could get our now-annual Santa Visit Picture, H and I gave in to Build-a-Bear. So meet Ken and Sally, all cozy in their boxes. Not kidding. That's Ken, not Rudolph.
We averted disaster with a playground stop on the way home from The Mall, and H averted a mama disaster by making a Frosting Bakeshop run and bringing a Viennese coffee to me.
Saturday night we got All Dolled Up in sequins and patent, complete with Red Lips. Well, I did, anyway. I don't think H wore any sequins.
Our first hosts served what might be my new favorite, Artillery Punch, which packs one, plus it has a storied history. Not a punch to be taken lightly.
Sunday brought foggy-headed (from sleep deprivation, not hangover) parents and energetic Beans, so we rolled into weekend wear for an early brunch at Open City.
Ken at brunch. You can now follow Ken on Instagram with the #KenofInstagram hashtag.
After all of the brunch frivolity, I had to head into the office and finish up a major deliverable. Just one more down between me and Real Christmas Time. Almost there.

Style Inspiration: Holiday Sparkle
I think I've mentioned that I'm in the holiday spirit. Big Time. That being said, December is the busiest month of the year in my DayJob. The most Christmassy I can get right now at home is The Elf. And making a big traditional Romanian Christmas dish today with my MIL.
Decorations and parties? Yeah. Sometime this week, they'll start to make they're way out of the basement and into our home.
In the meantime, I'm absolutely infatuated - really, in love with - sparkle. So in the interest of sharing the Christmas spirit and all of the glorious glitter of the season, here's a little bit of what's making me smile right now.

Style Dilemma: Easy Fashion to Make it Through the Holidays
Whether you have Beans or not, the holidays are crazy. If you're in Government work, like I am (and so much of the DC-area world is), it's a particularly crazy time of year. We make lists, we check them twice.
Then we decide what on that list ain't gonna happen.
I know I'm not alone in setting lofty holiday goals, whether for decorating, card-writing, or baking and cooking. Heck, not even my house cleaning meets my own holiday goals (you know that to-do item about cleaning out all of the closets for the holidays so we can give to charity? yeah).
So in the madness, I find that especially at this time of year, I have a fashion and style uniform. Pieces and tricks I turn to, that I know will keep me looking presentable, and maybe even fashionable, no matter how little time I have or sleep I've gotten the night before. Here's what I realized this morning, as I put on my concealer, powder, and lipstick in the car visor mirror in the office park parking lot.
#1 Super-Simple Makeup and skin care: I am not a makeup or skin care addict. I barely manage to wash my face regularly. In fact, last night is the first night I re-employed my beloved Clairsonic after probably a month hiatus. But here's what I do: I can't manage to put on my face before I leave, so I carry Bobbi Brown's Touch-Up Stick and pressed powder to cover and even gently, then put on a brighter lip (these days, it's the lovely, sheer Revlon Just Bitten). As a fair skinned girl with blue eyes, the pale powder and bright lip make my eyes pop and me look less exhausted. At least that's what I tell myself.
#2 Easy Sweaters in multiple colors: Whether it's Target or Gap or even a beloved Henri Bendel cashmere you bought on sale on your 2006 honeymoon (seriously, but here's a Nordstrom one in a similar color), simple, soft sweaters are easy. You can pair them with patterned bottoms in the same hue, a neutral khaki (like I did today with my khaki pencil skirt) or black, or even with another bright for the practically-jumped-the-shark color blocking.
#3 Statement Necklaces: If you're moving so fast you can't do more than pair a simple sweater with plain skirt, like me, then all you need to take the ensemble out of boring Government-worker-land is a statement necklace. Whether it's a favorite one (ain't nothin' wrong with having a "signature piece" you wear repeatedly, no matter how bold - promise) or a set of go-tos, bold on black (or heck, any other color) works. And this easy guide to pairing necklace shapes with necklines from Already Pretty can get you through any shape dilemma. My favorite DC-based sources for stunning baubles that won't break the bank? Queen Bee Designs and Fornash.
#4 That Piece: What's the one item in your wardrobe, be it necklace, dress, skirt, or shoe, that makes you stand taller, prouder, and more condfidently every time you wear it? What piece always garners compliments as you board the Metro or stop at your favorite coffee shop? Figure that out, then don't be afraid to use and re-use it. For me, it's (among other favorites) my favorite pair of black patent pumps. I strut when I wear them (they fit, they rock, and the go. with. everything.) Because even if you've worn it over and over, it makes you feel good, and you'll exude confidence, which goes ever so far in erasing the dark circles - or at least in distracting from them.
#5 Being Put Together: Simply stated, don't revert to sweats when you're exhausted. I learned a long time ago, from an Italian, ahem, friend, that if I put on an ensemble that is put together instead of schlumpy, I will rock it. It feels easier, but it isn't. Easy is the LBD that doesn't even require you to match your shoes to the dress. Easy is the pair of trousers that fits you impeccably - and a simple sweater that's pretty and comfortable. Easy is a sheer lipstick that took no time to put on and yet shows you bothered.
Those Italians know whereof they speak. In all things, really. Trust me.

Shop in Holiday Style: It's Santa, People!
Warning, disclaimer, caveat (circle one): I am unabashedly in the Christmas spirit, and am ignoring any Grinch or bah humbug Scrooge attempts (except for my new Grinch coffee mugs, which I love). If you can deal with me playing Christmas songs on Pandora, the cable music channels, and in the car, read on. If not, well, too bad.
SANTA IS HERE!
Actually, he's been here since just before Thanksgiving. As you might have seen on twitter just before Thanksgiving, Santa hit one of our local DC area malls in style: "Screw the reindeer, people, I'm in a Tesla." That may or may not be a direct quote.
Much more practical, I think.
Really.
OK. More stylish, at least?
Anywho.
When we were kids, I cannot remember a single Santa picture. We never, ever did the Photo-With-Santa thing. I'm not sure if it was because my parents didn't believe in paying money to have a picture taken or what, but we were the family that went to visit the mall Santa (Exton Mall, usually, for those of you southeastern PA folks) and only told him our lists. No pictures.
In fact, for years, I looked on the tradition with derision. Seriously. Eyerolling derision. I'm not proud.
And then The Beans arrived. And I've apparently gotten over it. We didn't force the infant or toddler picture (Santa really is scary at that age), but as soon as The Bean was old enough to sort of get it, we tried it out. And the pictures? Cheezball as they are? I love them.
Now, if only I could find them. But that's another post on disorganization or something.
So when my Santa cookies and milk package arrived a few weeks ago, I waited until The Beans were in bed, scarfed the cookies, but skipped the milk. I probably had one of my now beloved scotch+cider cocktails instead. And then I started plotting to get The Beans to see Santa.
So join me in line. Whether you have Beans or not. Going to see Santa is one of the few simple joys of the season. Sure, you could say that it's commercialized, and all about the shopping. I say pooh. Even if he's the Creepy Santa (and, based on the mug shot below, he's not), it's still worth it to either see the wonder on their faces or to be a kid again. Because you will be.
Go see Santa, wherever you are.
If you're in the DC area, get thee to the mall. I haven't seen pictures of other malls' Santas, but this one is decidedly uncreepy. He's at Tyson's Corner Center, along with all sorts of other holiday shopping conveniences, like cheap-ass valet (and free if you spend a certain amount), of which I'm, like, totally taking advantage. More on my take on holiday shopping later. The malls aren't evil, people. They're fun and useful.
Where: Tyson's Corner Center, Level 1, Fashion Court (between Bloomingdale's and Nordstrom)
When: 7 days a week, 10:00am - 9:30pm
Why: See my Christmas Spirit Rant above. If you don't get it, you're a Grinch.

Holiday Style: I Blame It on Gwyneth
Or rather, my dear online friend over at What Would Gwyneth Do. She posted earlier this week about being thrilled for Halloween because, though not a 'ween fan, it's the gateway drug - ahem - holiday to the rest of the holiday season.
Which is, of course, The Most Wonderful Time of the Year. Screw that Staples commercial.
While I must respectfully disagree with her Halloween stance (I lurv it! See my preparations here), I absolutely, completely 100% agree with the gateway holiday concept.
Up until, oh, last year, I had a very strict "I Don't Start Celebrating Christmas Until December 1" policy. Very strict. In high school, I had a bell I wore every day of December. But I wouldn't put it on until December 1st. My parents didn't decorate the house until December, we didn't Do Black Friday, and we most certainly didn't Finish Our Shopping Early.
Then I had kids.
Last year, I realized how much joy there is in the season, and how important it is for a family to establish traditions that The Beans understand and appreciate from all aspects of the holiday season. It's also important for Mama and Papa to celebrate.
So when someone posted about being eager to jump from spooky to snowy, it got my imagination going, and I couldn't stop pinning and party planning. So here, on the eve of a weekend when I'll be flying solo (H is away checking on our place down tha shore, among other family business), and will likely spend Saturday night quietly indulging in reality TV, cooking shows, and the internet, here's what I've found so far, along with my Pinterest boards the are particularly pertinent to All Things Cheery and Bright.

S'mores cookies. On The Big Cookie List of Cookies I Want to Make This Year. I will make at least 2 types, and bring home 6 more, one weekend this December. For more than 10 years, my college roommate and our two freshman year dorm neighbors (and dearest friends) and I have gathered for Cookie Day. We haven't missed a year of baking.
Dark nails. My last manicure is still chipping away, and while last fall's Chanel Peridot is absolutely still on trend (I'm still madly in love with it and oh, so glad I bought 2 + the Graphite), I'm infatuated with the sleek, deep colors this fall brings us.
Holiday classics. I know I'm not the only one who will recognize this still from White Christmas. I will watch it. I will make The Beans watch it. I will cry when they honor the General. And, this morning, as I was tooling around Pinterest, I had a brilliant idea: a Christmas Costume Party! Come dressed as your favorite holiday movie character! The possiblities are endless!
Gleaming exaggeration. This Marc Jacobs skirt is making the Pinterest rounds. To me, it's everything glorious about dressing during the holidays. So if I don't have that costume party, you can wear this to my Christmas Cocktail Party. Because, whether H knows it or not, we will be having a Christmas party this year.
I love fall. I love winter. I love snowy, foggy, gloomy days when you can curl up and snuggle, when you can bake your brains out, when you can take a walk in a Winter Wonderland.
And then you can wear this.
If you're not already following all of my Pinterest boards (and why wouldn't you be, she types confidently), here are a few of particular interest this season. If you pop on over to my Pinterest profile, I've just conveniently rearranged them to be at the tops. Enjoy - and pin away! I love seeing everyone else's pinspiration!
Party On... Exactly what it sounds like, all of my party inspiration, whether drinks, dresses, decorations, or daintly little treats.
#Sequins and Such One of my older boards, but, well, it's the holidays. So...sequins.
Thirst Quenchers Because Christmas Cocktail Parties need cocktails
Tis the Season I shuddered when my little sis was pinning Christmas crafts before Halloween. And then I started.
Food Designs This was my first recipe board, started before #healthyme. It has All The Good Things with cheese and fat that I'm going to offer guests for parties. All in moderation, my friends!
Sweet Tooth Designs I have one. So sue me. And the holidays offer me the chance to bake, bake, bake, then Give It All Away. Here are loads of dreamy desserts, some complicated, some insanely easy.
For When I Have Lots o' Time I started this board to pin those things that look like a lot of DIY fun. Turns out, there are some good gift ideas here. I have grandiose ideas of making gifts this year. Just like last year. And the year before...
For the Beans More DIY, but in theory Bean-focused. Though, truth be told, there are lots of things here that you could do Just Because, whether you've got Beans of your own or not.
Mama's Wish List So far, only 2 things. But it will grow. Someone let H know, please, that Pinterest is the Modern Girl's Amazon Wish List?
Winter Girl I won't go on any more about my Love For Winter
Weekends Around Town because we need to be stylish as we run our holiday errands and bake our cookies
#HealthyMe doesn't go away with Halloween. There are so many tasty ways to stay on track and stay inspired to keep moving. Really.
For H I find him sometimes difficult to buy for. So when I see something, I pin it.
There are more, but I'm sure you have your own Pinspiration, too. Where are you finding your holiday mojo this year? And don't tell me you aren't excited already. I just won't accept that. If I'm joyful, you have to be too.
