Style Dilemma Solved: WebMama Goes to a Wedding

WebMama wrote in to let us know how things went with her night out:

Hi! I ended up wearing the navy dress with nude hose and pewter heels. The blue tights and pewter heels just didn't look right. I think the blue Betsy Johnson tights were too bright blue and not navy enough. We had a fun night. My friend took a bunch of pictures. I'll see if there is a full body shot I can send you!

WebMama, I'm bummed the all-blue look didn't work for you. And you're right, for the monochromatic thing to work, the hues need to be very close. I struggled with the same thing this weekend in a grey sweater dress and grey tights (but my tights had a bit of texture, so I snuck by on that one). We will have to break you of the nude hose, though - in my book, there is No. Reason. To. Wear. Nude. Stockings., no matter how cold. But that's a battle for another style day (Smile)

And we would love to see pics of your night on the town!

Style Dilemma: The Shoe Challenge

WebMama wrote last week: I'm writing to hit you up for some fashion advice. I'm going to a wedding Saturday and am wearing this navy dress.

I also bought blue tights. Question is, what color shoes should I wear? I could go black patent - but like the idea of a lighter heel. What do you think of these? Or I could go even lighter like in the attached picture. Just curious what your gut reaction is. Thanks in advance!!

I messaged back (after letting it go too long because I was under a RealJob rock. Sorry, WebMama!): Yes - love the idea of lighter heel - pewter v pretty. but i would personally go with a rounder toe (though have had these pumps before and they're great).

ok, have a couple of suggestions.

on simplysoles.com, there's a blush-colored lillybee wedge that'd be darling, and a chie mihara round toe pump in tan (might be a bit casual)

on zappos.com, there's a sofft pump (fiorella) in a grey (darker) suede, and a vigotti ulinda in a pale grey.

are you going to wear tights, like the pic? LOVE the look

And in fact, I have had the pumps linked above. Nine West has absolutely reliable pumps/stillettos. Keep them in mind as a fallback plan for any shoe dilemma.

And the conversation continued...

WebMama: Awesome, thanks!! I did order the pewter pumps. I'll see how they look. I LOVE the pale grey pumps you recommended more though. Maybe I'll see if I can get them for Saturday delivery. If not, I'll order them for another time. Thank you so much! Of course, it's okay for you to post. I did get blue tights like the picture. My friend, Liz, said "yuck yuck" to the look but my sister really liked it. You're the deciding vote and I'm happy you tipped the scales in favor of "yes" :)

Now we're all just waiting for pictures!

Style Dilemma Solved: First of the Season

As I wrote in Friday's posts, H had a holiday party Friday night. And I had no dress I was comfortable in. So I bought one.

I was unsure of shoes, and really wanted to accessorize, but was feeling a bit cautious. So I phoned up my sis Prettyinpink, and asked. While we came to no conclusions, we discussed options. The most daring of which was putting the new crystal necklace over the black lace minidress. Would it be too much?

Nope. Just perfect.

While H thought it "disappeared" on top of the lace, I was thrilled. I was absolutely channelling some 60s-era Mama. Jackie O I'm not, nor did I manage a bouffant 'do (unwashed tight chignon was all I could manage in the 30 minutes I had to beautify), but a girl really needs some glitz and glamour.

It was one of those rare times when Coco's mantra didn't apply: I didn't take one piece off before I walked out the door.

Rapid Returns...and the winner is...

Despite H's response that this is a "hoochy mama" dress, BlueSuitGirl and The Bean gave it the thumbs up in my post-shopping fashion show last night. BlueSuitGirl and I debated why H wasn't sold. Or sort of. He is, and always will be a fan of "hoochy mama." He loves me in a short skirt (and has, in fact, bought me not-really-in-jest-but-I'll-say-that-so-you-don't-get-mad some very interesting skirts over the years). We think there's just something about lace he's not gung ho about.

But he'll get over it. Especially when I'm parading around his holiday party tonight. I will not be wearing tights.

Rapid Returns...Strike One

I desperately wanted to love this dress. It looked amazing on me from the side. And oddly, though pale, it didn't wash me and my fair, redheaded skin out. But from the front? Oooh. Not helpful on the physique. (LOFT)

Rapid Returns...more sparkles

Just because I could...every working girl (read into that what you will) needs a glittery card case. Mine's pale pink. (More LOFT)

Rapid Returns...all that glitters

More LOFT. Some bling. Dresses up a T, and it will also add marvelous sparkle to the basic black dresses in my closet.

Rapid Returns...note to self

I fell in love with this sweater, but they didn't have my size. The dolman drape of it still has shape, and the fitted waist is figure-whittling. Note to self: buy online. Soon. (Second, very loud note to self: do. not. wear. flashdance style.)

Rapid Returns...on to the LOFT

As I was in suburbia all day yesterday, and in a relative hurry (though it is, quite frankly, amazing to wander through stores and not have to worry about The Bean trailing behind me) to get it all in (Target, Mamashopping, Container Store, BestBuy, you name it), I hit up "The Loft" (note to marketers: it's a dumb name. No matter what people call it in passing, you shouldn't name the store that). I was betting on some girly style at a reasonable price. And I found it.

While I was really on the hunt for a dress to wear to Holiday Parties, I saw these cords when I walked in, and slung a pair over my arm to try on. I've been searching for cords for years, now, and just haven't found the right pair. These fit like a glove. Thank you, LOFT, for your curvy fit. Purchased in this grey and black.

Rapid Returns...continued

And this one...Merona chenille (did I really buy chenille?)...but in a deep teal. And again, not nearly as slouchy chic as I wanted, but it'll serve well as weekend wear - and with trousers or a skirt at work on a chilly day (I'm blessed with an office that stays relatively cool, so I can wear sweaters.

Rapid Returns

I really need to post more often. The farther apart my posts, the sillier my "headlines." Sorry.

So Mama scored A Day to Myself yesterday. I took the day meant to honor our veterans, said prayers of thanks for them, and left the kids with H. I had errands to run, but I wanted to do them by myself. And I did. If you followed my tweets yesterday, you know that I was all over the place (and yes, am embarrassed about that "Overshare" badge). But in between stocking up on diaper cream and disposable static cling placemats (yeah, there are such things), I managed to snag a few pieces for myself.

I'm not as comfortable with my body right now as I'd like. I've eaten like crap and haven't made it to yoga class in 3 weeks, maybe 4. But nevertheless, I know darned well that if I have clothes that fit, I feel much better. So I was really hoping I'd score some cheap(er) pieces I could love while Up the Pike (Rockville Pike, that is).

In the end, I'm going to return one dress (did that whole "buy two, take them home, see which is really better" thing), and was going to return one sweater, but it all worked out.

And I have two Christmas dishtowels.

Mossimo "Ultrasoft" merino turtleneck. OK, for it to be this loose and comfy, you'd have to buy at least two sizes up. Seriously. I bought an XL, and it's fitted. And even at my heaviest, that's pushing it. But it's unfortunately a trend w/ Target cuts right now...everything I tried is smaller than it should be - and I'm not the only one - BlueSuitGirl reported the same thing

OK...having issues with Blogger (only one pic at a time? Really?)...so to get these pics up, I'll post a series. It'll look like I'm some majorly prolific blogger. Wheeee!
