Style on the Runway: Fashion Meets Art Runway Show

Yes, I'm unabashedly cribbing the "good stuff" from Daily Candy DC (and also a reminder to liloleme that i should probably be reading some of those press releases and such in my inbox), but oooh! if Isabel doesn't keep us inside, this should be fantastic!

(Hmmmm...it's probably not a good idea to take The Bean when she a) has a normal bedtime at 7/7:30, b) has been sick, and c) if she isn't home sick one more day, will have had her First Day of School. That's probably asking for The Massive Meltdown, right?)

What: Models strut down an outdoor runway between Carbon and International Visions Art Gallery. 
Why: Check out pieces from emerging local and green designers.

Style Inspiration: Design on a (Relative) Dime

Thank, you Daily Candy, for helping me with my climb out of the Doldrums.

I think I might have to buy a new pair of Chucks. Saks pre-order, here I come.

However, while H is absolutely supportive of the things I need to do on the climb (when The Bean and I got home yesterday, he asked "Didn't you buy any shoes?"), I'm not sure he'd be ok with spending 200 bucks on non-workout sneakers for the Missoni version (I have a natural tendency to all things Missoni; something about that glorious, colorful stripey-ness).

On the other hand, I might be able to swing $105 for the Comme des Garcons (I'll spin a tale of them being commemorative of our Manhattan honeymoon and the afternoon we stumbled on the CdG Chelsea outpost). Or at least the delighfully graphic $80 Marimekko option.

I'm dreaming up HipMama Weekend Playground Outfits right now.

Give in Style: Giving Girls a Prom

About 300 years ago, I collected prom and bridesmaid dresses from coworkers to donate for girls who wanted to go to prom, but didn't have the means to dress up for the coming of age event. I was inordinately proud of myself.



A shopping bag full of atrociously flowered and chiffoned dresses sat under my desk for a year before I finally just dropped them at the plain ol' Salvation Army (also a good thing, but not exactly the intention).





Fortunately, the women behind Once Upon a Prom give us a few more guidelines and make it lots easier, so that we don't just clean out our closets and dump the icky stuff on the unsuspecting girls. They're looking for formal or fancy party dresses from the year 2000 on. That helps quite a bit. No turquoise poofballs, please. They also ask that the dresses are in excellent condition, are cleaned, and please, please, please, put them on a hanger (how hard is that?).



So...take 10 minutes and dig 'em out. You've got a week to donate dresses to underserved young women for their big night.

Oh, and if you're fresh out of prom dresses, you can still help. Monetary donations are also always welcome, or you can rationalize a new jewelry purchase by buying the "Every Girl is a Princess" bangle for $55. Donations and bangle purchase proceeds go to offset the costs of running the dress drive.
