Style Dilemmas: A Ball, a Nomination, a Gala, and a Family Portrait

It’s been a little quiet here on the DC Celine blogging front lately. I’ve been trying to focus on work and prepping the new Day Job for my 2-week absence while amping up #healthyme and spending time with the family.

That’s a lot.

I am not, however, gone from the blogging airwaves. I’m just keeping it to the other media at the moment. So here’s a taste of what friends (online and IRL) are asking and how we’re (because it’s collective in almost every circumstance) solving their style dilemmas.

Belle of the Ball (Pinterest board here, Chelsea’s posts here)
We haven’t posted more than Chelsea’s updates on Lee’s online fashion show. We do have a styling challenge we’re going to post - Chelsea’s going to style the champagne one shouldered dress, I’m going to take the gunmetal (with support from my warhead friends). I won’t say more than that, because I’m keeping my styling secrets secret. Gotta beat Chelsea, you know.

Dining in DC Does the RAMMYs
Lisa, the beauty and brains behind the acclaimed Dining in DC blog as well as the newly minted (baked? stirred? some other cooking reference) 4 Bitten Media cooperative, asked me for help a while back. The theme to this year’s Big Gala (the DC dining scene's Oscars) is “Hats Off,” which translates to, literally, hats for the men (easy, right) and fascinators for the women. Fun, on trend, and, well, when else do you wear a fasinator except to Gold Cup? She had some fantastic gown options, including a red stunner I’m dying to see her wear, but she decided on a, well, gunmetal frock. Apparently my preference for the strong, elegant shade is catching. She’s going to top her dark, side-swept locks with a pretty fascinator in purply hues. Searching for a dressy but not bride-y fasinator was not an easy task. (No pictures on this one - I'm keeping her gala ensemble a secret for her.)

Celebrating CityandSand (Pinterest board here)
I “overheard” hillarygrove and jesserker, just two of my new twitterverse-to-IRL friends congratulating cityandsand on her nomination. Nosy that I am, “What for?” Turns out she’s been nominated as member of the year and will join the board of directors for an organization near and dear to her heart. There’s a celebratory reception at which they’ll announce the award, and she was contemplating a new dress. Fans of the twitterfashionshow that they are, hillarygrove and jesserker sprang into action, and I butted in. There’s a pinterest board, and lots of color and sparkle. And just so you don’t think that pinterest is just a tool for companies to get you to buy new things, turns out cityandsand was inspired by the pins to don a dress from her closet. She has one similar to the pink one hanging below in a dove grey.

Dress selected, we moved on to jewelry. I’ll admit I had a little problem separating cityandsand’s (whom I’ve never met IRL, but seems to be similar in stature to me) jewelry search from my own lust-objects. The Kenneth Jay Lane cuff needs to be in my jewelry box now.

A Mama and Her Beans
I have a cousin. A long-lost cousin. She was a friend first, and we later discovered through drunken yells about Iggles that we are, in fact, fairly closely related. (It was a long time ago, ok? Long before either of us even thought about Beans. Looooong before.) Well, she texted me a few weeks ago. She’s just had her 3rd Bean, a second girl to sandwich her boy, and they’re doing a family portrait. On the beach. They live near Lewes, Delaware, at the beach, and she’s constantly posting pictures of their “playground” time on the beach. Yeah. You can hate her.

But anywho, she needed help picking an ensemble that would fit into the blue & white theme they’d picked for eveyone to wear. It would be a beach shoot, too, so casual. She was brave enough (seriously, she shouldn’t have any shame in front of me, given all that’s in our past, family or no) to text me pictures from the LOFT dressing room. I haven’t seen the final shot yet, but she ended up with a prettily layered navy blue top and white capris. Beachy, comfy, flattering, and she was happy in it. Ultimately, she picked it herself based on how she felt in it (“Feels great!” she said), which should, along with the fact that it’s navy and textured, translate well into a flattering and not-dated family picture. I considered sending her to Allie’s advice on dressing for the family portrait, and I certainly called on it myself (don’t pick the white for up top), but she found her own happy clothes place.

Top has somehow disappeared from the LOFT site between me putting it in the image above and now, so here's a similar one, Marisa Cargo Pants in white cotton poplin (LOFT). Background: my FriendCousin's backyard. Almost literally.

The moral of the story? Just because I’m posting Favorite Posts and gearing up for vacation doesn’t mean I’m not available for ensemble idea bouncing. Really! Tweet, email (dcceline dot blogspot at gmail), facebook message, or comment with your own dilemma, and we’ll see what we can do! Also, I won't post it unless you say it's ok. I never, ever post anything about anyone unless they're ok with it.

Shop in Style: Black Friday and Beyond

It's been yeeeeaaaaars since I, uh, indulged in Black Friday shopping. Can't even remember the last time I braved the crowds. I'm a shop-along-the-way kinda gal. And then I save some things, like Santa's stocking purchases, for the week before Christmas, head to Chevy Chase, and walk around (Rodman's, World Market, Saks) to soak up the atmosphere and crisp wintry air. I love the carols playing and the lights twinkling...just like in Silver Bells (Strings of street lights, Even stop lights, Blink a bright red and green, As the shoppers rush home with their treasures). I have to figure out how I'll manage that this year, as The Bean goes to bed right when I'd normally be shopping...hmmm...

Anywho...for those of you who feel the urge to shop, but want to avoid the box stores on Friday. Make sure you check the Washington Post's Sunday Source for their list, too...

Cusp - new markdowns starting Friday through 2 December
Daisy Too - sparkly stuff is 20% off (what a great promotion)
Hu's Shoes - D.L. & co. candle with purchase
National Jean Co - the sale's already started, and runs through the 25th - 20% off everything, and some stuff up to 50% off
The Purse Store - 30-70% off everything, no code required. Easy as pie.
Sangaree - 30% off the entire collection 23-25 November

And don't forget to hit the online sales - no better way to skirt the crowds at box stores and online boutiques alike!

Shop in Style: Review of Cusp Out to Lunch

I can't claim to have made it there, but Kelly of DC Culture and Fashion did, so check out her review of the Cusp Out to Lunch event in Georgetown.

And for those retailers out there, I strongly second her call for more casual shopping events. Bribes work - we shop when you give us food and drink - and it doesn't have to be fancy!

Shop in Style: alice + olivia at Cusp Georgetown

Cusp Georgetown
April 26, 2007
10am-7pm

A rep from alice + olivia will be on hand to help you do what Sienna Miller does and Edie Sedgewick did effortlessly. Above are a couple of my favorite alice + olivia looks from Cusp's parent site, Nieman Marcus. Needless to say, these are looks that for both those With Bean and Without.

Specially designed tanks are also free with purchase (while supplies last, of course).

One more reason to skimp on the regular chai lattes this week & save up the extra cash for a trip (or two) to Georgetown.

A Little Bit Late: Fashion Wednesday in D.C. - Part I

Two Wednesdays ago, the style stars were aligned over our nation's capital. District Sample Sale. Press Preview to the Georgetown Cusp store. Opening show to DC Fashion Week. Either it was planned to make the rest of the world realize DC Has Style, or someone didn't check their calendars. Either way, it worked.

First stop, Cusp Georgetown. Airier, more open, more organic space than the impression I had of the Tyson's store. Love the stonework. Product lines are the same - by design - as other stores, but there's more focus on individual departments. Rather than shoes or cosmetics being out and about in the store, there's a specific shoe space. Easier to find. It's one of the changes Cusp customers asked for after the first stores. Cusp customers, consider yourselves heard. All in all, Cusp's got the goods.

A little disappointing, though, was the answer I got when I asked "Why D.C.?" I was hoping that I'd hear an "It's a new, edgy market," or "D.C. has the style sense (and moolah) to support two stores." What I got: "D.C. got lucky." I'm not sure whether Nieman Marcus (Cusp's parent company) just doesn't want to reveal its market selection criteria or process, or it means D.C.'s just got the plain ol' cash to support the store. I'm not stupid, of course that has to be part of a commerical decision - we are in a free market economy, after all - but as a Believer in D.C. Style, I was saddened. I could've handled a teensy white lie, NM PR people. What better way to win over customers than to tell them what great style they have?

01 March 2007

Feet, be silent.

Why, oh why didn't I heed my own advice and wear comfortable flats last night?

By the time I got through the Cusp press preview, helping out a little (I can't sit there and not help, even if Babsie D tells me to sit still), shopping the DSS, and even sitting for the District Sugar Shack, my tootsies were hurtin'.

Duh.

Honest, they're comfortable shoes, normally. Just not when worn from 7 in the morning to 11:30 at night. I keep forgetting that part. And any other outfit options were just not flats friendly.

And then, the good lord blessed me with an incredibly boring meeting this morning. Take yourself to that 8 o'clock class you registered for on Friday mornings ('cause it was a great idea to finish all your classes before noon on Fridays). And then remember trying to get there after hitting the 'Fe (yes, belying my undergrad alliances there) for Thursday night. Works really well, right?

Well, it works even better when you're a Responsible Adult and you have to drive to a new location waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay out in the suburbs (plus side: no terrible traffic going the "wrong" way) to get to a Big Meeting. Let's just say that I was really glad I was driving, not metroing, and that one of my DSS purchases last night was the hairwash-saving, no-blow-dry-needed headeband.

And flats. Glad to have flats.

I promise I'll write more later, and give you my take on the evening's events, but now I have to go earn some money so I can clothe myself. Paying job calling. The 2-second version?

Cusp: organic space tucked into Georgetown (versus the more industrial impression I got from the Tysons store). St. John's and Dana Buchmann-free way of buying That Which We Love.

DSS: worth it. If not for the Fashion and Deals, for the possible anthropological study some PhD-toting alien could do on our society.

DSS2 (read: afterparty): Blue Gin. Good space. DJ set just the right vibe for a mix of women All Shopped Out and Men Who Escaped. One review of the Cake Bar cupcakes, though: slab of butter - and not in a good way.*

And my feet are beginning to recover...and if you can't wait until I report out more, check out DC Culture and Fashion and After Hours for their reports, and Panda Head for her snapshots of styles caught at the sale.**

*Report from a friend who indulged - or attempted to - I'm sugar-free at the moment, meaning no cupcakes.

**Kudos to them - Ladies, I have no idea how you stayed up - or got up - to write these. You win.

Cusp Georgetown Launch Party

Anyone in? True, it's the day after the District Sample Sale (have your tickets yet?), so not so hot timing on their part - we'll all have spent our $$ the night before, but...should be fun nevertheless.

Thursday, March 1, 7-9 pm
3030 M Street NW

As of right now, I don't see a way of RSVPing (required) without the email link, but post a comment or email me @ dcceline.blogspot@gmail.com if you're interested (or sign yourself up for their email announcements), and we'll see what we can do.

V-Day Party at Cusp Tyson's

Brilliant way to spend V-Day - or rather, pre-V-Day...

Cupcakes and DIY vintage V-Day cards...all in the airy, warehouse home of edgy fashion in Tyson's Corner - yes, those two words can now be in the same sentence.

Hit Cusp between 6 & 9 pm Tuesday night to partake. And if you can't get there, check out the store's blog.
