So I could also wear a BCBG dress I scored at the Atlantic City outlet way back in September. It's much more demure, and I can wear it to work, so no change...it's a black and white pop-arty-print, belted, with a square neck and fluttery sleeves.
but it's not as, um, flattering as the Ali Ro dress. Very pretty, and suits me well (H always tells me I look nice in it), but...

Style Dilemma: Embassy Function Straight from Work
I'm stumped.
H and I are attending a vodka and caviar dinner at the Kazakh embassy (an executive friend won it at a silent auction a ways back) Monday. It's right after work, so there's probably no expectation that we would change. It's also a "and spouses" event. So there's a possibility that the spouses don't work and will be able to doll themselves up.
The first thought is: it's after work, so business attire. A nice suit with funky shoes and a select piece of jewelry or two. Or a LBD.
Second thought: None of my suits fit. And my LBD is pilled and raggedy.
Third thought: my Ali Ro print dress, which, when paired with black tights and black peep toes with a touch of hardware is acceptable for a work-like function (I wore it for our company president's holiday party).
Fourth thought: eh. (Though I love it)
I'm tempted to go buy a new suit, which H thought was a fine idea (I need one anyway), but I'm not sure I'll have time, and buying something like that at the last minute never works.
So what's a girl to do?
Honestly? Probably just wear the Ali Ro...as if it's a hardship - I love the dress and the outfit...but I was looking forward to maybe having something new.
Time will (literally) tell, I suppose.

Birthday Style: What Are *You* Wearing?
A long time ago in a land far, far away, a frustrated federal contractor wondered what she'd do if she weren't coaching Government workers through learning to use their computers more effectively.
"Writing about style," she thought.
She told her hubby, and he said, "Why don't you start a blog?"
"A what?"
A few weeks later, DC Celine was born. She stumbled through her first posts, figured out how to add pictures and links. Then came tags.
Somewhere in there, she got her first comments. Among a few loyal others, Miss Scarlet established herself as a regular and witty reader and commenter. She was one of my first BlogFriends. She, along with NotCarrie and Serena, helped me navigate this BlogWorld through her online antics.
We've never met, but we've exchanged emails, posted to each other's blogs, chatted, and helped each other through style dilemmas.
And today's her birthday.
I know she loves her birthday, and so she's hopefully out celebrating with an all day fest, rather than online to see this post.
But Happiest Birthday, Miss Scarlet. May your day bring you joy and style.
And oh. Tell us what you're wearing!

Finding Mojo - Thwarted!
As I emerge from the anti-style world of not being able to wash and dry my hair, pick out my clothes without a little diva hanging on my leg, and take more than 2 seconds to "do my face,"* I'm trying to push the envelope. Granted, my closet isn't in the best of shape right now, but it's a little better than it was, so as I get ready each morning, I'm trying, trying, trying to not do the Washington Frump. Don't always succeed, but I try.
My memory's not long enough to go all the way back to Monday, but yesterday I managed to update my LBD a la the 500 style mags proclaiming "redo your closet with no money" (so nice of them to be cost conscious in these difficult economic times. gimme a break): black wool knit shift with a black ribbed turtleneck...and my beloved Daslu boots.** I was a very happy camper.
Today's another day of Very Important Meetings (ok, not so, but everyone generally tries to
dress as if they are), and I was all excited. I decided yesterday I'd do some take on what I consider the Real J's*** signature look: a buttoned up suit paired with a fun printed T. I've yet to attempt it, but figured my newfound love of a Metallica Death Magnetic concert T would work perfectly.
So I tried it with black pants and a tweed jacket. Eh. Alright, but not finished enough. Jacket is a little too bulky. Next attempt: grey pinstripe pantssuit.
Perfect.
All proud, I meander over to the bathroom to show off to H.
"Whaddaya think?"
"Great, but too much." He thought it would be just too much for my colonels to bear, so he convinced me to tone it down.

"Friday," he consoled.
So off came my tribute to Lars and James, and on went the (alright not so, but still) staid teal sweater. I did throw on my mommy's gift of topaz earrings with my grandmother's topaz ring and her 70s-style medallion to make myself feel better. And my new(er) peep-toes help too (a little hardware goes a long way for this girl).

Friday, here we come.
*We were a little cramped in our lovely home, and The Bean was sleeping in our bedroom, so I couldn't get ready until she was up. Ditto for the shower/blowdry thing.
**I have some retired colonels who love my boots, and they're in town this week, so, well, flaunt what ya got, I say.
***Yup, she's still out there, allbeit far away...she's rockin' Addis Ababa style right now.
